Yakima LoadWarrior Rack install and Hella Optilux 1300 Lights

This install is pretty straight forward with the hardest part being the wiring for the lights. The Yakima Loadwarrior with Extension rack is a fairly sturdy unit and is fully capable of connecting all of Yakimas accessories. The only one I have is the Light bar brackets that I used to mount up two pair of Hella Optilux 1300 Lights.

The Yakima Loadwarrior Rack bolts together right out of the box with 4 screws (8 if you have the extension) and firmly mounts to the existing cross bars on the WJ Roof Rack. Other Factory racks I am sure would be the same. The mounts for the cross bars are kinda tricky but not too bad, simply click in the base plate, push it to the center support bars, place the backet over the top to hold it in place and then put the bottom brace under the cross bar and bolt it down using the supplied bolts and big black knobs, repeat for all 4 corners, center the rack where you want it and tighten it down.. The front Yakima fairing is necessary due to a howling that occurs should you take it off. In mounting my Lights I manufactured a clear fairing out of lexan to take the place of the smoked Yakima one. I actually made two of these, the first out of a cheaper plexiglass that promptly cracked, I then went back to Home Depot and purchased the more expensive Lexan that was a bitch to cut but has held up a lot better.

The Light Wiring is the fun part on this install.. you actually have to drill a hole in your roof in order to get the wiring from the roof inside the vehicle.. Using a 1/4" bit I removed the front cover of the drivers side roof rail and drilled down inside the mounting bracket making sure not to drill through the headliner.. nice and easy as it goes.. Second I fished three wires through this whole, 1 ground, and 2 hots so that I could run one set of lights or the other.. one pair is aimed more to the side and the centers are straight on, this gives a nice field of vison.. I sealed the hole and wires with some Permatex Gasket and proceeded to let it dry. After the sealer dried it cut the wires to length and installed a pigtail connection so that removal of the rack would be easy in case I need to remove it. All of these connectors fit nicely under the side rail mount cover.
